How GLP-1 Medications May Support Your Health

Medications in this class act on the hormones that help regulate appetite and blood sugar. Alongside nutrition and lifestyle changes, they may help reduce appetite and support gradual weight management. Whether treatment is right for you is a decision you make with a licensed provider after a consultation, and results vary from person to person.

No. Compounded Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are not FDA-approved, which means the FDA has not evaluated their safety, effectiveness, or quality. FDA’s compounding overview explains this for all compounded drugs.

FDA-approved versions of these ingredients exist only as brand-name products, such as Wegovy®, Ozempic®, Zepbound®, and Mounjaro®. Medica Weight Loss does not dispense those products. Clinical trial results cited on this site come from studies of the brand-name medications, not compounded ones.

Medica Weight Loss is a telehealth company, not a pharmacy. A licensed provider decides whether a compounded medication is appropriate for you, and a state-licensed partner compounding pharmacy prepares it based on your individual prescription. Read our compounded medication disclaimer for more detail.

You may be a good candidate for GLP-1 medication if you are 18 or older and have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, or sleep apnea. These thresholds match the criteria in the prescribing information for the brand-name medications, but they are a starting point, not a guarantee of approval.

A licensed Medica Weight Loss provider makes the final decision after reviewing your online health assessment, medical history, and current medications. Treatment is generally not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2.

Medica Weight Loss offers compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide, which are prescription-only and not FDA-approved. Read our guide to who is a good candidate for medical weight loss, or start your consultation to find out whether treatment is right for you.

Compounded medications are prescription drugs prepared by a licensed pharmacist for an individual patient, based on a prescription from a provider. Compounding can adjust the strength or form of a medication, or leave out an ingredient a patient cannot tolerate, when a provider determines a commercially available product is not the right fit for that patient.

A compounding pharmacy is the state-licensed pharmacy that prepares these medications. Pharmacies are licensed and overseen primarily by state boards of pharmacy, not approved by the FDA. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved either, which means the FDA has not evaluated their safety, effectiveness, or quality. FDA’s compounding overview explains how they are regulated.

Medica Weight Loss is a telehealth company, not a pharmacy. If a licensed provider prescribes compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide for you, a state-licensed partner compounding pharmacy prepares it based on your individual prescription. Read our full guide to how compounding pharmacies work.

GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide work by mimicking gut hormones that tell your brain you are full.

    • Reduced appetite: they lower hunger signals, so smaller portions feel satisfying.
    • Slower stomach emptying: food stays in your stomach longer, so you feel full for longer after eating.

Tirzepatide acts on two hormone pathways (GIP and GLP-1), while semaglutide acts on one (GLP-1). In the STEP 1 trial, brand-name semaglutide plus lifestyle support produced an average weight loss of 14.9% at 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% on placebo. Results vary and are not guaranteed.

These medications are intended for use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity, and they are prescribed only after a provider reviews your health history. Medica Weight Loss offers compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide, which are not FDA-approved. Trial results come from studies of brand-name products. See our overview of GLP-1 benefits or start your consultation.

Weight loss with GLP-1 medication builds gradually over months, not days or weeks, and the pace differs from person to person. Treatment generally begins at a low dose that your provider adjusts over time, so the full effect develops as your dose changes.

Clinical trials show the scale of what is possible over a longer period. In STEP 1, brand-name semaglutide plus lifestyle support produced an average weight loss of 14.9% at 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% on placebo. In SURMOUNT-1, brand-name tirzepatide averaged 15.0%, 19.5%, and 20.9% at the 5 mg, 10 mg, and 15 mg weekly doses at 72 weeks, compared with 3.1% on placebo. These averages reflect more than a year of treatment.

Your own results depend on your dose, how well you tolerate treatment, your eating patterns, physical activity, sleep, and other health conditions. Results are not guaranteed, and compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide, which are not FDA-approved, have not been studied in trials like these. Your Medica Weight Loss care team follows up with you during treatment. See our GLP-1 weight loss timeline for what patients commonly experience along the way, or start your consultation.

The most common GLP-1 side effects are digestive: nausea, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, indigestion, and abdominal discomfort. In the STEP 1 trial of brand-name semaglutide, nausea and diarrhea were the most frequent, and they were typically mild to moderate and eased over time. Side effects tend to be most noticeable when you start treatment and after each dose increase. Fatigue, reflux, and hair thinning are also reported.

Some side effects are serious and need prompt attention. Contact your provider right away for severe or persistent abdominal pain, which can signal pancreatitis; pain under your right ribs with fever or yellowing skin, which can signal a gallbladder problem; signs of dehydration such as very little urine; or symptoms of low blood sugar such as shakiness, sweating, or confusion, particularly if you also take insulin. Swelling of the face or throat or trouble breathing is an emergency: call 911.

GLP-1 medications are not appropriate for everyone, including people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2, and people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. This is why a licensed provider reviews your health history before prescribing. Medica Weight Loss offers compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide, which are not FDA-approved and have not been evaluated by the FDA for safety, effectiveness, or quality. Read our detailed guides to semaglutide side effects and tirzepatide side effects.
